Dee Poon, President of Brands and Retailing, Speaks on HKAF Panel on Youth and Educational Exchanges

Dee Poon, President of Brands and Retailing and a member of the Hong Kong- ASEAN Foundation Advisory Council, participated in a panel discussion on “Understanding the Future of HK-ASEAN Relations through Youth and Educational Exchanges.” This event, organized by the Hong Kong-ASEAN Foundation (HKAF) in collaboration with the “A New Look into ASEAN” program, celebrated the launch of a new series featured on the program Hong Kong United on Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK).

The panel explored the significance of youth and educational exchanges between Hong Kong and ASEAN nations in promoting mutual understanding and cooperation. By examining grassroots initiatives and personal interactions, the discussion highlighted case studies in cultural, educational, and economic collaborations led by governments, young people, and educational institutions. It addressed the challenges and opportunities within this realm and provided strategic recommendations to enhance future educational exchanges and youth initiatives between Hong Kong and ASEAN countries.

During the panel, Dee emphasized the evolving needs of Hong Kong's youth and the importance of engaging them through diverse and inclusive approaches. Traditionally viewed as the leaders of tomorrow, young people today have distinct viewpoints that are free from preconceived notions about the future. The panel addressed three primary concerns currently facing youth: the impact of consumption patterns and climate change, particularly evident in the ASEAN region as rising sea levels affect their lives and futures; the necessity for intergenerational allyship to tackle pressing issues; and the role of technology in shaping their experiences.

Dee stressed the importance of having "an open mind and an open heart," urging the need to find more opportunities to connect and communicate. This focus on openness and connection highlights the potential for transformative exchanges between Hong Kong and ASEAN youth, paving the way for a more interconnected future. She pointed out that “talent is universally distributed,” noting that collaboration allows young people to gain valuable insights through shared experiences. This sentiment reflects the vibrant engagement of Hong Kong's youth with the broader ASEAN community.
